The New Stuff

Electric spoon zaps your tongue to create flavor

If your best attempt at replicating mom’s homemade vegetable soup came out a little bit bland, you might consider reaching for this weird new spoon instead of the salt. Developed by scientists at New York University Abu Dhabi, the spoon uses electrodes that zap your tongue to create the sensation of taste. By varying the properties of the shock, the utensil can simulate saltiness, sourness, and bitterness with varying degrees of success, New Scientist reports. The technology could be useful for adding flavor to food without adding chemicals like sodium that contribute to health problems such as hypertension.
