Secrets of the coins in your pocket as Queen gets face-lift

The face of the Queen is going to change on UK coins.

The Royal Mint has announced the current image of Queen Elizabeth will be updated next year.

Specialist designers will get the chance to send in their versions anonymously.

Nobody wants to look older than they are.

The "heads" side of the monarch hasn't changed in 16 years and this will be only the fifth time it has been modified in 62 years.

Ian Rank-Broadley redesigned the picture of the Queen back in 1998, which means all coins dated since then contain his work.

He told Newsbeat: "It's not an easy job to render the monarch's features as nobody wants to look older than they are.

"If you're approaching your nineties you don't want millions of people to think that you're approaching your nineties."

If you look under the Queen's neck on coins dated 1998 or later you can see the initials IRB. Ian told us he's "the most distributed artist in the world".
